Located in Boyle Heights, Jovenes, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) youth and community services organization specializing in culturally appropriate services to homeless and low-income Latinos.

Jovenes, which means “youth” in Spanish, was originally created to respond to the needs of a very underserved population:  homeless immigrant youth. The organization was founded in 1989 by Father Richard Estrada, CMF, a Claretian missionary, together with other concerned individuals.

While the demographic focus of Jovenes’ programs has expanded, the organization still maintains a special expertise in assisting Latino immigrants.

Now serving 1,000 people a year, Jovenes provides quality social services free of charge to homeless and at-risk young people, 16-24, as well as foster youth, homeless individuals of all ages, and low-income families.

 

Jovenes’ seeks to empower people with very limited resources and opportunities to improve their lives and achieve their potential.

 

Jovenes programs include:

·               emergency shelter

·               transitional housing

·               mental health services

·               case management

·               referrals

·               health education

·               HIV testing and prevention

·               homeless street outreach

·               employment services

·               independent living program for youth leaving the foster care system

·               learning center with computerized and live instruction

·               life skills and vocational skills workshops, GED preparation, ESL, and computer classes

·               community arts program

·               the water station project
